Failure to seek professional care for a badly decayed tooth at Haws Family Dentistry’s Brigham City, Utah clinic can lead to several different oral health complications. As time goes on, the bacterial presence of the tooth decay can penetrate the pulp, causing an infection in the root or socket of the tooth.

Sometimes, we can treat a tooth in this level of distress with a root canal or other endodontic treatment. However, if the infection has spread to the underlying gums causing an abscess, we might recommend a total extraction. Once your gums have healed and all traces of infection have cleared, we can then replace the tooth’s presence in your mouth by performing a bridge restoration.

This will replace the missing tooth with one single piece of dental work that is fused to a pair of crowns. It will eventually be anchored onto abutments formed from the core of the two neighboring teeth.

Your dentist will start removing most of the tooth enamel from the two neighboring teeth, leaving behind two post-shaped pillars of healthy dentin. A detailed impression is made of the abutments, and the related teeth in your bite pattern. This will be sent to our off-site dental lab where a bridge will be custom-crafted. Hard plastic temporary crowns are cemented over each abutment to protect it while your bridge is being made.

A member of our staff will call you to set up a follow-up appointment when your bridge is ready. The temporary crowns will be removed and your new bridge will be cemented onto two abutments.
