As Halloween sneaks around the corner, it’s important to do your best to prevent the cavities that come with the treats we fill our trick-or-treat bags with. To help you enjoy your Halloween candy as well as fight tooth decay, we are happy to provide the following tips:
Clean your smile
Deeply clean your smile each day, especially on Halloween. Brush your teeth in the morning and at night, floss your teeth at least once during the day, and rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash at least once as well. This will help you kill the bacteria that form because of the candy you consume.
Choose your candy carefully
It’s best to avoid eating hard, sticky candies that cling to your teeth. These treats increase your chances of developing cavities.
Eat your candy at the right time
If you eat your candy during or after a meal, you will have a better chance at preventing tooth decay. This is because the saliva you produce while eating will wash away the harmful particles in your mouth.
Drink more water
Drinking water will help rinse and wash your smile throughout the day. If possible, drink fluoridated water to not only wash your teeth, but to strengthen them as well.
Chew sugarless gum
Chew sugarless gum that has been approved by the American Dental Association. Do so for at least 20 minutes after you’ve eaten a meal or candy. This will help reduce tooth decay because the increased saliva will wash your smile and neutralize the acid in your mouth that is produced by bacteria.
Halloween can be a scary time for our chompers, but if you use the provided tips, your smile will have a better chance at surviving while you eat your favorite holiday treats.
