If you want a strong, healthy and comfortable smile, then you need to fight enamel erosion on a regular basis. Enamel erosion is a common dental issue that results from frequently consuming acidic foods and beverages. What happens is the acid from the foods and drinks attacks your teeth and makes them vulnerable to tooth decay. Because it wears down the enamel, it can also cause tooth sensitivity.

To help you fight enamel erosion in Brigham City, Utah, Dr. Jayson C. Haws and our dental team have some recommendations for you.

First, try to avoid consuming any food or beverage that is acidic. However, we understand that there are times when you will still do so. At this point, please make sure to eat them with a meal. This is better than snacking on them throughout the day. This is the case because other minerals in your meal can neutralize the acid and prevent enamel erosion.

Second, drink water while you eat an acidic food. This can wash the acid away and help limit the time it has contact with the teeth.

Third, use a straw when drinking an acidic drink. This also limits the time the acid has to attack your smile because the beverage will pass through your mouth and skip the teeth altogether. It’s also important to drink the beverage at one sitting instead of sipping on it throughout the day.

Fourth, wait for at least 30 minutes to scrub your smile with your toothbrush after you have had an acidic food or drink. This is important because if you brush too soon, the toothbrush can wear away your enamel. This is because the acidic product can erode your tooth enamel and make it soft and weak. The bristles will then make matters worse.

If you do these things, you’ll be on the right track toward the healthy and pain-free smile you deserve.
