If you have braces, it is very important to take care of your appliance by eating the best foods possible. This includes soft, smooth, and chewable foods that do not apply pressure to your brackets and wires while you eat. If you do not follow the suggestions of your orthodontist, the hard foods you eat can break your appliance, which will delay your progress. So, in order to have the best and most successful experience with your braces, orthodontists today strongly recommend that you avoid eating the following foods:

• Ice
• Nuts
• Gum
• Pretzels
• Popcorn
• Caramel
• Corn Chips
• Chunky peanut butter
• Gooey chocolate bars
• Hard crackers and cookies
• Chewy candy, like taffy, gummy bears, and sour patch kids
• Hard candy, like jaw breakers, root beer barrels, and jaw breakers

We also recommend being cautious while eating the following foods, and, if possible, please cut them into small pieces before eating them:

• Meat
• Pizza
• Pears
• Apples
• Burgers
• Peaches
• Sandwiches
• Raw vegetables
• Corn on the cob
• Chewy bread, like French/Italian bread

The previous lists might be a little discouraging, but we are happy to give you the following list of encouraged and acceptable foods to eat while you have braces:

• Soup
• Yogurt
• Melons
• Cheese
• Pudding
• Bananas
• Applesauce
• Soft cookies
• Soft crackers
• Hulless popcorn
• Soft pasta, like spaghetti and ravioli
